People who have a family member addicted to gambling can now enroll in their own support program in Windsor.
Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare launches its latest service in April.
The program was designed to meet a constant demand for clients, explained coordinator Shawn Rumble.
'The demand is high,' he said. 'We always receive requests for services.'
Three times this year, Hôtel-Dieu Grace will offer the six-day program. After April's session, the hospital will offer one in July and a third in November.
An estimated 18 people are expected to take the program.
'Like any addiction, gambling, gaming, and internet dependency affect more than just the individual who chooses to continue their respective behaviour,' Rumble said. 'This program addition will lead to the creation of informed, stable, and supportive friends and family members.'
The program is open to both women and men, offering them their own private rooms and washrooms.
The world’s first gambling addiction treatment centre for women is going to be opened in 2021 in Midlands.
The step has been taken after the data reflected the record high number of women getting addicted to gambling in UK.
The therapy center will treat 24 women on an annual basis where it boats of safe environment and support.
According to report by Gambling Insider, CEO of Gordon Moody Association, which is a therapy charity, Matthew Hickey said: “Gambling is the hidden addiction and hidden further again within that is the story of women gamblers and women who are affected by others.”
He added, “There is an absolutely urgent need to change this and the impact of COVID-19 means this is a growing crisis that needs to be tackled with more expertise and resources.”
